Multimeter

The multimeter is a handheld instrument designed to measure current, resistance, and capacitance. As one of the most valuable tools a technician uses on the job, it is important that it is used correctly. Before using a multimeter you should read the safety information and become familiar with the safety warnings and cautions. Taking the time to review the safety information is for your own safety as well as protecting the meter and all the equipment involved.

Microprocessor

A microprocessor carries out a number of electronic functions in an integrated circuit. The microprocessors found in BUNN equipment are used to control water temperature, water delivery, motors, and other integrated components needed for machine operation.

Mechanical Control Thermostat

A control thermostat is a device designed to keep water at a constant temperature. It is preset for a specific temperature and will open and close its contacts to maintain that temperature.

Main Screen

The term used to describe the screen that is displayed when the brewer is not in use. This screen is also displayed after exiting the programming mode.

Liquid Level Probe

The liquid level probe is a sensor that monitors the water level in the tank. When water comes in contact with the probe it completes the circuit to ground. Once the circuit is complete the control board knows the take is full and opens the refill circuit shutting off the incoming water supply.

Liquid Level Control Board

The liquid level control board is an electronic device designed to automatically fill the brew tank with water when it senses a low level condition. It works in conjunction with the Liquid Level Probe and tank ground. A low AC signal is applied to the probe from this board. Minerals in the water complete the path from the probe to ground. When no ground is present and the machine is “on”, the liquid level board will then send a signal to the refill solenoid to energize. It will de-energize when the probe again senses water.

Limit Thermostat

A limit thermostat is a safety device designed to open or break the circuit in high temperature or high current situations. They are rated for both current and temperature.

Last On-Time

During a pulse brew, this is the time set for the second on-time, and each alternating on-time for the remainder of the brew cycle.

Intellisteam®

Technology that allows the customer to see the milk frothing in the BUNN super automatic espresso systems with an integrated temperature sensor that simply cuts off steam through a wand when the milk reaches the preset temperature, eliminating the need to manually use a thermometer.

Infusion Series®

A product line of coffee/rea brewers that allow different brewing profiles from the same machine/footprint, saving valuable counter space.

Hydolysis (relating to coffee)

A chemical reaction where the materials created during extraction break down further into water-soluble proteins and sugars. Part of the brewing process that includes wetting and extraction.

High Intensity®

Technology that mixes high viscosity concentrates thoroughly, consistently, and accurately to the required brix setting. The consistent results ensure the best quality beverage in the cup and contribute to maximum profits in the beverage program.

Heaters

The tank heater is a device used to heat the water in the tank. It is quite similar to the heating elements found in common household appliances, such as water heaters, ovens, and clothes dryers to name a few. Its construction is a high heat-resistive element encased in a heat-treated stainless steel tube. Magnesium oxide powder is used as filler and insulation to keep the resistive wire in place and away from the casing. Elements are built for specific applications and are not necessarily interchangeable. They are rated for applied voltage and a specific power output (wattage), which will determine the resistance (ohms value).

Hammer Arrestor

A hammer arrestor is a plumbing device designed to absorb spikes in water pressure. It consists of a chamber filled with air that will compress when a surge of water is introduced into the water line. An indication of water hammer is clanging or noisy pipes and perhaps fluctuations in water pressure.

Funnel Sensing Coil

A sensor on the front hood of the brewer, which reads what name and batch size of coffee was ground into the funnel and allows for the brewer to automatically set itself to what is read from the funnel handle.

Funnel Detect

Sets the inability to initiate a brew cycle if the funnel is not properly inserted into the funnel rails.

FlavorGard®

Technology that continuously monitors extract-to-water ratio and assures flavor consistency.

First Time-On

During a pulse brew, this is the time set for the initial flow of water over the grounds.

Factory Default

The factory preset brew settings that were installed into the brewer's memory.

Extraction

Water-soluble materials dissolve and move out of the coffee grounds and into the water. Part of the brewing process that includes Wetting and Hydrolysis.

Easy Pulse

This is a simplified version of Pulse Brew. It is programmed by selecting the time period of brew water dispense. Easy Pulse allows the operator to input a set time for which the brewer software will determine a pulse sequence.

Easy Pour®

An exclusive design used in decanters to assure convenient serving with a drip-proof, fast pouring lip from front or either side.

Dynamic Water Pressure

Dynamic pressure is the measurement of moving water in a closed condition, such as in a water line.

Drip Time

The length of time from when the water spray over the grounds ends, to the time that no water drips from the funnel tip

Dilution

A function used to reduce strength of a concentrate for cold beverages. Generally cold tap water is blended with tea or coffee concentrate.

Deliming Tool

The deliming tool is used to remove lime build up in the sprayhead, bypass port, and sprayhead fitting. This tool is used differently depending on what you are cleaning.

Deliming Spring

The deliming spring is used to remove lime build up in the sprayhead tube on machines that do not have dispense valves. To use this tool, remove the sprayhead and insert the spring into the sprayhead tube and use a sawing motion, back and forth to losen and remove the lime build up.

DBC

Digital Brewer Control, BUNN was among the first in the dispensed beverage industry to introduce advanced beverage technology to the industry with Digital Brewer Control systems that allow users to precisely and consistently meet specific flavor profiles while also reducing training and labor costs.

Cool Froth®

Technology used in BUNN super automatic espresso systems that perfectly foams cold milk for great tasting iced beverages.

Contactor

A contactor is a heavy duty relay designed to handle switching large load components. This device is used in machines with multiple tank heaters or tank heaters that exceed 4000 watts. The contactor is energized by turning on the control thermostat, and supplies power to the tank heater(s).

Condenser Fan

Condenser fan moves air across the condenser coil and fins to increase the transfer of heat. Obstructing the flow of air will reduce efficiency of cooling but can lead to compressor failure.

Compressor

Draws a vacuum or low pressure on the cooling side of the refrigerant cycle and compresses the gas into the high pressure or condensing side of the cycle. A compressor is one of the main components in the makeup of a refrigeration system.

Clamp-On-Ammeters

Clamp-On Ammeters are the recommended tool used for testing current and perhaps the most convenient. It is a non-invasive procedure, you simply clamp the meter onto one wire at a time. If you grab two wires they will cancel each other out and you will get an incorrect reading.

Chip

A computer chip containing either recipes for specific coffee flavors or advertising messages which are read by the sensing coils on the brewer. One chip is embedded in each Smart Funnel® handle to carry the coffee flavor name and batch size ground from the grinder to the brewer.

Capacitor

A component that acts similarly to a battery, it stores an electric charge then releases it when required. This device is found most generally on our grinder motors and compressors.

Bypass

A function, like dilution, that reduces strength of a concentrate but it is intended for hot beverages. Generally, hot water is blended with coffee concentrate. Variable bypass allows different bypass rates for various brew volumes (small, medium and large) within a recipe.

BUNNLink®

An automated monitoring and communication system that detects pending service problems and forwards alerts for service.

Brix Pump

A proportioning device, which pumps two liquids (water and concentrate) in an exact ratio. The ratio is determined by the pump design, and is maintained precisely. The pump operates on the source pressure of one of the proportioned liquids; typically the incoming water eliminating the need for CO2 or electric power. Vacuum shut off is designed within the brix pump when the concentrate bag-in-box is totally empty to stop operation of brix pump.
